About the MAXWell Lab

The MAXWell Lab at the University of Maryland is a WiMAX Forum Applications Lab. The goal is to promote research and development into applications for WiMAX mobile broadband networks. The lab was founded as a partnership between the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), the Laboratory for Telecommunications Sciences (LTS), the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and Fujitsu. The theme for the lab is research into location-based services.

Lab Capabilities

By Fall 2008, the MAXWell Lab will be a fully-featured wireless operator, supporting both the mobile WiMAX air interface and back-end management using the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). The network supports backhaul of 802.16e traffic over 802.16d. The deployment plan is as follows:

  • Spring 2008: 802.16d Installation
  • Summer 2008: 802.16e Installation
  • Fall 2008: IMS Integration
  • Future: Expansion of Mobile Base Stations

Additionally the lab has a variety of test and measurement tools, for both 802.16 PHY/MAC and Network/Application analysis.
